Community Fridge set to feed the hungry and tackle food waste in Bournemouth

Community Fridge are donating fridges of food around Bournemouth, specifically in Boscombe, at Sainsbury’s and Boscombe Library.

The food is usually donated by households, supermarkets, restaurants and shops when they’ve got excess food and when the food is nearing it’s expiry date.

The average UK family wastes £810 per year by throwing away unused food and drink.

Each community Fridge redistributes an average of 0.5 tonnes of food a month, which would otherwise go to waste.

The first Community Fridge was launched in 2016 by HUBBUB, in Derbyshire.

Since then, it has popped up in 40 locations across the UK, with another 35 coming soon.

The items shared can be anything from dried goods that are past their ‘best before’ date to surplus fruit, vegetables, and sandwiches from local cafes.

Locally, there are Community Fridges available in Bridport, Bournemouth and Poole, with one more set to become available in Dorchester.
