Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill warns Poole could be exploited by migrants, and says the recent crisis should serve as a warning to coastal communities that we are ‘vulnerable’.
He has called for further investment to improve coastal security in Dorset.
This comes as 12 migrants crashed on to the Dover shore last week, after traveling in a catamaran from Iran. It is estimated 220 people are thought to have attempted the journey in the past six weeks.
The government added another 1,000 Border Forces last year, but small ports remain vulnerable to illegal entry.
Illegal immigrants have targeted Poole Port in the past, but never directly through the water.
Last year, over 20 migrants were found in lorries and on ferries entering Poole Port, but no dinghies spotted yet.
