The Veterans Hub started up as a part time project in 2017 after the founder’s experience with mental health earlier on in the year.
Mr Andy Price, founder of the Veterans Hub and ex-rifleman said: “I had a pretty substantial breakdown following over a decade of continuous deployments and was making plans to take my own life basically.”
He set up the hub to help others in a similar situation.
The project is open to the whole community with the primary service users being people that have been in the armed forces and their family members.
“When you struggle with mental health it’s an incredibly lonely place and you feel like it’s just you going through whatever you’re going through and if you’re a veteran our traumas are often a lot more complex, especially when you’ve been to places like Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Bosnia or wherever, what’s sent us into this place is often a lot more complex.”
The Veterans Hub continued to run their services through both lockdowns, with an increase in people needing support.
It almost became overwhelming at one point.
Mr Price said: “I think in the first lockdown for instance the amount of people requiring support tripled, it almost became overwhelming at one point.
“We have reduced the service to an extent so we can’t sell things for instance, we can’t open to the public which means were losing quite a lot of money that goes towards the overheads.”
