Cricket club chairman is trying to break the mould between Asian cricketers

January 25, 2024 //  by Harry Slynn

Brian Dobson, Chair at Winton Cricket Club is doing everything he can to create an integrated club.

Brian is trying to avoid a similar situation as they do in Spain where ex pacts don’t mix with fellow Spanish locals.

The club are trying to blend White British Nationals with other members of Asian descent but Mr Dobson admits it will be an uphill task.

Speaking to Buzz news:

“As far as I’m concerned we are trying to do everything we can possibly do, but what we have to be careful of is the fact that British Asians tend to stick together and thus doing so create small communities which could impact communication within the club.”

He added:

“We don’t want a case where half the field is White British and the other half is Indian British because it will impact the local community as well as results.”

This comes after a report was published last summer by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket who concluded that ‘more than 80% of a pool of 4,000 cricketers with Asian heritage claimed they had experienced discrimination.’

The board also added that English cricket suffers from “widespread and deep rooted racism, sexism, elitism and class based discrimination at all levels of the game.”

However Mr Dobson is hopeful his club is heading in the right direction: “We need to make sure all parties are integrating everyone , and if we do its going to be really really successful.”

“We’ve got some really positive people and we are doing all we can to continue it that way.”
