Students from all over Dorset attended the ‘student lock in event’, It was hosted by various vintage stores in the Arcade in Bournemouth town last weekend.
On Saturday 12th November, ‘Vintage Paradise’, ‘Go To Marketplace’ and ‘Geeks & Freaks’ hosted the ‘student lock in event’ as both an opportunity for students to get discounted, sustainable clothes. As well as to help gain customers they have lost in the recent struggles with the cost of living crisis.
Since the beginning of the academic year starting September 2022, these stores have taken in under half the income and business they usually annually take in.
This seems to align with the cost-of-living crisis affecting the luxuries of clothes shopping people have had to cut down on because of rising bill prices.
This event brought in almost double the income of 3 months in just a singular day. Resulting in a very successful victory for all 3 small business owners.
Rackia Mchatta, the owner of Vintage Paradise said, “It was a big challenge but we always want to hear people’s feedback to better future events and the shop as a whole.”
The stores holding this event also made both local residents as well as students, aware of their stores in which they can find affordable, sustainable clothing, accessories, vinyl’s and more.
This awareness of affordability and sustainability shops in an economically declining town is helpful not just to the small businesses themselves but consumers too.
