Pokesdown train station lift still ‘broken’ despite go-ahead on funding

BCP council have promised £2.6 million to install lifts at Pokesdown train station, yet no work seems to be underway.

The Pokesdown station lift has been in and out of use constantly for over 40 years.

Wheelchair users are still waiting – despite a pledge to spend millions to fix railway station lift that broke down 35 years ago.

BCP’s Future fund meeting last week on Wednesday allocated the money, due to the lifts being in and out of action for over 40 years.

On the National Rail enquiry website, they have stated that the station has ramp access, which does follow the European “design standards for accessible railway stations”.

Despite this, there is still concern over the accessibility for the disabled commuters. Local commuter Maria (who didn’t wish for her last name to be published) spoke out about it.

She said: “I have a friend in a wheelchair and she always struggles with transport in general. With this money put in by the council, the lift should be their first priority. Work should be underway”.
