Council Announces Homeless Priorities Ahead of Cold Christmas Season

The Council (BCP) has announced that it is assigning rough sleeping priorities to improve support for the homeless ahead of the Christmas season.

According to a BPC Statement, these priorities include reducing the use of unsuitable temporary accommodation (e.g. B&Bs),  promoting awareness of where residents can go receive help, support and advice from a range of local organisations.

The council has also announced a £45m homeless property acquisition programme which involves the purchase of properties by the council to help those who are finding themselves homeless.

There is a range of homeless charities that work in a drop-in basis that provide support for those who currently find themselves homeless. These charities include Shelter Dorset (available on 0344 515 1400) and St Pauls Direct Access (available at 01202 587160).

Many people have said to have noticed an increase in homelessness in Bournemouth Town Centre.

George Wortley, while visiting Bournemouth Christmas Wonderland in the Town Centre, said “We did see lots of homeless people” adding “It’s so sad to see so many people on the streets especially when it’s so cold. It’s hard to know how to help even though there are charities doing some amazing work in the area”

There are also systems in place for when it comes to severe weather where emergency accommodation is provided for rough sleepers. If that is you do contact the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) at 0300 500 0914.
