Oldham Council in Greater Manchester, has become the first local authority to defy government guidance and vaccinate their homeless population against Covid-19.
Under current guidance from the committee in charge of the vaccine programme, councils should vaccinate by age, followed by those with underlying health conditions, and front line workers.
Dr Zahid Chauhan, who spear headed the change in Oldham, believes that due to their low life expectancy and much higher likelihood of contracting the virus, homeless people are just as vulnerable as someone over 80.
Our reporter, Ellie Smitherman spoke to Dr Chauhan about the motivation behind the controversial initiative and the changes he would like to see, moving forward.
